Therapy is an opportunity to discuss issues that are important to you while having a trained, objective person help you work through the current situation and with dealing with similar future situations. Therapy can be about one specific problem, or multiple problems. Therapy is a collaborative effort and it takes an active role of both client and therapist for change to occur.
People see a therapist for a wide range of reasons from stress management to treatment of a specific diagnosis. Sometimes an event occurs that causes an individual to seek out help, while others may attend therapy because it provides a trained objective person to help them work through some issues they may have been struggling with for years. Therapy can be beneficial because a client may feel a sense of control in their life and have the tools to be able to make better decisions or changes in their life.
The length of time it takes to see results from counseling sessions varies depending on the individual and the issues being addressed. Some clients may see improvements after just a few sessions, while others may require longer-term therapy.
While religious and spiritual issues may not be a focus of therapy, they are relevant aspects of a client's life, helping to define their values, beliefs, lifestyle choices. and decision making and serving as a source of strength and support. The therapist's role is to be sensitive to any beliefs that are important to the client and integrate them into therapy if the client wishes for this. The integration of faith into the therapy process is not pastoral counseling or spiritual direction.
